In Denmark, all children and young adults under the age of 22, receive free dental care through the municipal dental care system (Den kommunale tandpleje).
Key facts for new residents
- It is 100% Free: All check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and braces (if medically necessary) are completely free of charge.
Age limit: This free service covers everyone up to their 22nd birthday.
- Automatic invitations: You do not need to register your child. Once your child is registered at a danish address (with a CPR number), the municipality will automatically send an invitation letter via Digital Post (MitID).
Where does the treatment take place?
- Treatment usually takes place at a public clinic located in your municipality.
- Teens aged 16–21 can choose to visit a regular private dentist for free instead, but they must inform the municipality before making an appointment.
Dental Care for Adults (Over 22)
- Adults must use a private dentist (tandlæge) and pay for their own treatment.
- The Danish public healthcare system (Sygesikringen) automatically covers a small part of the costs, but you must pay the rest yourself.
